From the rugged coastlines of Kaikōura, New Zealand, these freeform Pāua abalone shell pendants are treasures shaped by both sea and hand. Naturally tumbled by the ocean and later hand-polished by me to reveal their brilliance, each piece carries the raw power of the wild. Unlike farmed shells, these are wild Pāua, often displaying the full rainbow spectrum of colour that gives them their name. Shimmering greens, blues, purples, and pinks dance across the surface, making every pendant a unique statement of the ocean’s artistry.
Because they are left in their natural freeform shape, you may notice organic curves, edges, or textures that tell the story of their journey through sea and shore.

Spiritual Significance
Pāua is regarded as a stone of intuition, harmony, and emotional balance. Its iridescent surface symbolises the ever-shifting beauty of the ocean and life itself, reminding the wearer of resilience through change. In Māori culture, Pāua is often used to represent the eyes of ancestors, offering protection and a guiding light. These wild Kaikōura shells, having endured the tides, hold an especially powerful energy of strength, freedom, and connection to nature.

Geology & Science
Pāua (Haliotis iris) is a marine mollusc unique to New Zealand waters. Its shell is composed of aragonite crystals stacked in a microscopic “brickwork” structure, giving rise to its renowned iridescence through light interference. Wild specimens like these often display stronger and more varied colouring than farmed shells due to their natural diet and harsher marine environment.
The shell’s nacre (mother-of-pearl) layers are made of calcium carbonate trapped with organic matrix, giving it the rainbow effect akin to peacock feathers and butterfly wings .
Pāua shell is composed of aragonite (CaCO₃), arranged in a brick-like microscopic structure that provides both strength and shimmer.
