Commissions & Custom Work
All commissioned pieces are handmade and created to order. Each piece is designed in collaboration with the client and produced using natural materials, meaning variations in tone, grain, and finish are part of the work.
Design Process & Changes
Most commissions include up to two design options based on the initial brief. These are intended to help refine direction and ensure the final piece aligns with the client’s vision.
Once a final design, size, and specification have been confirmed, the design is considered approved for production.
However!
Each commission includes a collaborative design stage where ideas, references, and options are developed.
Clients may request changes during this pre-production stage, including adjustments to design direction, size, or material choice. A reasonable number of revisions are included at this stage to refine the final piece (typically up to two rounds of adjustments unless otherwise agreed).
To support reflection, I may provide multiple design options and allow time for consideration before final approval. This includes periods where materials are being sourced or prepared.
Once the final design, dimensions, and materials are confirmed, the commission moves into production. At this point, the design is considered approved and no further changes can be made without it being treated as a new commission.
Changes requested after confirmation may not always be possible. If changes are requested after work has already begun, they may be treated as a new commission or incur additional costs depending on the stage of production and materials already used.
For engraved or laser-worked designs, limitations in scale and material behaviour may affect detail clarity. I will always advise where a design may not translate well to the chosen material.
Communication regarding commissions will be limited to design, production, and delivery updates. Excessive revision requests or repeated changes outside agreed scope may result in delays or cancellation of the commission.
Material Changes
Material changes are only possible before materials have been ordered or allocated.
This is particularly important when working with natural, limited, or symbolic materials, where availability and meaning may significantly affect both the design and outcome. Once materials have been selected and sourced for a specific commission, substitutions cannot be made.
Timelines & Completion
Estimated completion times are provided in good faith based on the scope and complexity of the commission at the time of booking.
As all work is handmade and production is dependent on multiple factors, timelines may be affected by:
- design complexity and revision stages
- material behaviour and preparation requirements
- existing commissioned work
- workshops, events, and external commitments
- studio capacity, including scheduled assistance or training support
- And my own personal health as I do have some auto immune Heath complications.
Where delays are likely to occur, clients will be informed as early as possible. Timelines remain flexible to ensure each piece is completed to a high standard.
Design Guidance & Maker Expertise
With bespoke work, I will always offer guidance based on materials, process, and design feasibility. This may include advice on:
- structural integrity
- engraving or detailing limitations
- material suitability
- long-term durability
- symbolic or aesthetic clarity within the chosen medium
These recommendations are based on experience working directly with natural materials and production methods.
If a client chooses to proceed against this advice, I will do my best to fulfil the requested specification. However, any resulting limitations in finish, clarity, or durability are accepted as part of that decision.
I cannot guarantee outcomes where core technical guidance has been declined or overridden.
Deposits
A non-refundable 50% deposit is required to secure all custom commission work.
This covers:
- initial design time
- material sourcing and preparation
- reservation of workshop time
Work will not begin or material orders made until the deposit has been received. The deposit will be required on the sign off of the design work.
Final payment is required prior to dispatch. Work will not be released until full payment has cleared.
Pricing, Changes & Additional Work
Quotes are based on the agreed design, dimensions, materials, and scope confirmed at the start of the commission.
Any changes requested after approval may affect the final cost.
This includes, but is not limited to:
- design alterations
- size or material changes
- additional elements or detailing
- extra time required due to revisions or delays in decision-making
Where changes occur during production, costs will be adjusted to reflect additional materials, labour, and time incurred. Any revised costs will be communicated and agreed before further work continues.
Materials
I primarily work with natural and often limited materials. Due to the nature of these materials, substitutions or replacements may be necessary if availability changes.
Natural materials vary in grain, tone, texture, and response to engraving or finishing. These variations are part of the work and not considered faults.
Right to Decline Work
I reserve the right to decline or discontinue a commission if the brief changes significantly beyond the original agreement or if it is no longer possible to complete the work to a standard I am willing to attach my name to.
Cancellation
If a commission is cancelled after work has begun, the deposit will not be refunded and may be used to cover materials and time already allocated.
Cultural, Spiritual & Symbolic Work
I work with symbolic, spiritual, and culturally significant imagery with care and respect for their meaning and context.
These elements are treated as intentional, not decorative. I expect clients to approach such work with the same level of respect and consideration when requesting or commissioning it.
If a requested design risks misrepresentation, distortion of meaning, or is reduced in a way that compromises its intended integrity, I reserve the right to refuse, pause, or end the commission.
This is to ensure that the work remains respectful in both intention and execution.
Agreement to Terms
By placing a commission order and paying a deposit, the client confirms they have read, understood, and agreed to these Terms & Conditions.
Payment of the deposit acts as acceptance of these terms and forms a binding agreement for the commissioned work.
For any one after me for event work, prop work, community work please see my contract in my terms of service section.
