Powdered Sea Brick – Thames Estuary Artefact Pigment
Crushed and powdered sea brick collected from the historic Thames Estuary – a unique pigment steeped in urban folklore, wartime echoes, and tidal reclamation. Once part of London’s architecture, now shaped by decades (if not centuries) of tidal erosion and river alchemy, these bricks are transformed into fine, earthy powder for use in art, craft, and ritual.
Each piece is foraged along the Thames foreshore, where remnants of the city’s past wash ashore — bricks from long-demolished buildings, war rubble from the Blitz, and forgotten structures. Their precise origin is often lost to time, but their presence is a tangible piece of London’s layered history, repurposed into something new.
🧱 Scientific & Historical Background:
Material: Fired clay brick, now mineral-rich and eroded by the Thames tides
Possible Components: Silica, alumina, iron oxides (natural pigments), lime, ash
Age: Varies – possibly Victorian through mid-20th century; includes WWII rubble
Location: Thames Estuary Foreshore, hand-foraged and collected responsibly
Brick from the Thames often dates back to eras where building waste and even bombsite rubble were swept or dumped into the river. The estuary became an unintentional archive of architectural memory, now offered back as raw, tactile pigment.
