Agatised Dinosaur Bone Hei Toki Inspired Pendant – Handmade British Fossil Jewellery
This handmade pendant has been individually carved from genuine agatised dinosaur bone recovered from Oxfordshire, England. Shaped into a modern Hei Toki inspired adze form and carefully finished by hand, the pendant transforms an extraordinary piece of prehistoric history into wearable art.
The natural colours, fossil structures, and mineral patterns visible within the stone are the result of a fossilisation process that began millions of years ago, preserving traces of a creature that once walked across ancient landscapes long before humans existed.
About Agatised Dinosaur Bone
Despite its name, agatised dinosaur bone is not simply ancient bone that has survived unchanged through time.
After burial, groundwater carrying dissolved minerals gradually moved through the porous structure of the original bone. Over millions of years, silica-rich minerals replaced and preserved the bone’s internal structure through a process known as permineralisation.
The resulting fossil often contains forms of chalcedony, agate, quartz, and other silica minerals, creating the intricate cellular patterns and colours that make fossil dinosaur bone so distinctive.
Each piece is unique, preserving microscopic traces of the original bone structure while becoming a stone in its own right.
A Window into Deep Time
The material used in this pendant was recovered from Oxfordshire, an area well known for its rich fossil heritage and prehistoric discoveries.
During the age of the dinosaurs, the landscapes of Britain looked dramatically different from those seen today. The fossil preserved within this pendant represents a tangible connection to a world that existed many millions of years before human civilisation.
About the Hei Toki Form
The pendant is carved in a modern Hei Toki inspired adze style. Historically, toki (adzes) were important tools used throughout Polynesian cultures for carving, shaping, and creating.
Today, the form is widely appreciated as a symbol of craftsmanship, determination, skill, strength, and the ability to shape one’s own path.
This piece is a contemporary artistic interpretation inspired by the form rather than a traditional cultural artefact.
Symbolism and Spiritual Traditions
Within fossil collecting and spiritual traditions alike, dinosaur bone is often associated with endurance, resilience, ancestral memory, transformation, and deep connection to Earth’s history.
Many people are drawn to fossil materials because they provide a physical reminder of the immense age of our planet and the countless lives and landscapes that existed before us.
