Oak Dowsing Pendulum Board – Icelandic Viking Horse & Runic Circle Design
This handmade dowsing pendulum board is crafted from natural oak and features an Icelandic Viking-inspired horse design surrounded by a circular band of runes.
The artwork was inspired by a historic pair of earrings held in the National Museum of Iceland in Reykjavík, reinterpreted here as a contemporary design for a wooden pendulum board. The surrounding runic circle adds another layer of historical symbolism, drawing the design into the wider tradition of Viking Age writing, ornament, and protective imagery.
Each board also includes a drilled hole designed to hold an incense stick, allowing incense to be incorporated into meditation, altar work, or personal divination practice.
The Horse in Norse & Icelandic Tradition
Horses held an important place in Norse culture, not only as working and travelling animals but also within mythology and religious tradition.
The horse appears throughout Norse mythology, most famously in the form of Sleipnir, the eight-legged horse associated with the god Odin. Horses could therefore carry associations with movement, journeys, strength, status, and the crossing between different realms.
Iceland’s Viking Age heritage gives the horse particularly strong cultural resonance, with horses remaining deeply embedded in the country’s history and identity.
The Runic Circle
The outer design incorporates a circular arrangement of runes, inspired by the visual language of historical runic inscriptions.
Runes were used as writing systems across Germanic and Norse-speaking cultures, including Viking Age Scandinavia. Beyond their practical use for writing and inscription, runes have also acquired layers of symbolic and magical interpretation through historical sources and later traditions.
The exact meaning of a runic circle depends upon the individual runes and arrangement used, so this design is best appreciated as an artistic and historical reference rather than as a guaranteed magical inscription.
About the Oak
Oak was a highly valued timber throughout Northern Europe and has a strong presence in Norse history, shipbuilding, construction, tools, and everyday objects.
Its durability and longevity have also contributed to its symbolic associations with strength, endurance, protection, and resilience.
Using Your Pendulum Board
Pendulum and dowsing practices are approached in many different ways, including personal reflection, meditation, and spiritual forms of divination.
If you are new to pendulum work or runic traditions, take time to research their history and responsible use before incorporating them into your own practice. This board is intended as a handmade tool for personal exploration rather than a substitute for professional or evidence-based advice.
