This pendant carries the gentle presence of Aotearoa’s pounamu — a stone long respected for its protective, grounding, and heart-centred energy. Pounamu (New Zealand greenstone jade) has been treasured for generations and is considered a taonga, a precious stone connected to strength, ancestry, and the natural world.
This piece began as a naturally tumbled offcut from the work of New Zealand jade carvers. Rather than reshaping the stone, its natural tumbled form has been preserved, allowing the organic curves, colour variations, and character of the jade to remain just as they emerged from the tumbling process.
In my studio the stone has been carefully drilled and engraved with the word:
Aroha
In Te Reo Māori, Aroha is often translated as love, but its meaning runs deeper. It embodies compassion, empathy, kindness, and the sacred connection between people, land, and spirit. It is a word that carries warmth, care, and the reminder to move through the world with an open heart.
The engraving is subtle and respectful, sitting naturally within the surface of the stone so the beauty of the pounamu itself remains the centre of the piece.
Because these stones began as tumbled offcuts, each pendant has its own unique shape, tone, and natural markings, meaning no two pieces will ever be identical.
