Gathered from the freshwater rivers of Aotearoa (New Zealand), these pink mussel shell chips are a gentle, luminous by-product of my studio work — reclaimed from carving and hand-polished pendants, then crushed to give new life to what would otherwise be waste.
Each vial holds the shimmer of river light — soft pearlescent tones of rose, cream, and ivory — with a texture that catches light beautifully in resin, clay, or jewellery inlay.
They’re also a natural fit for ritual offerings, altar work, or sea- and river-based spellcraft, connecting craft and spirit through the energy of water and renewal.

🪶 Spirit & Significance
These shells carry the energy of flow, healing, and emotional clarity.
Traditionally, shell is a symbol of rebirth, protection, and connection to the oceanic mother — even when sourced from freshwater, it mirrors that same calming lunar current that governs tides and emotions.
Use these chips to balance energy, encourage gentle transformation, or as a symbolic offering to water spirits and ancestral lines tied to rivers and the sea.

🌊 Science & Structure
Material: Freshwater Pink Mussel Shell (Unio or Hyriopsis spp.)
• Composition: Calcium carbonate (aragonite form) with organic nacre
• Hardness: ~3.5 Mohs
• Structure: Layered nacreous micro-crystals (aragonite platelets)
• Origin: Rivers and lakes of Aotearoa (New Zealand)
• Sustainability: Responsibly gathered, no live harvesting — only offcuts and naturally shed shell
These shells formed in mineral-rich waters, developing their pink hue from trace iron and manganese compounds. The iridescence comes from microscopic layering, bending light to produce its rainbow shimmer — science’s version of magic.
