Lime Wood Sunflower & Fibonacci Earrings – Botanical Mathematical Design
A pair of handmade lime wood oval earrings featuring a sunflower and Fibonacci sequence design, combining natural timber with mathematical and botanical inspiration.
The sunflower is one of nature’s most recognisable examples of phyllotaxis — the arrangement of seeds within the flower head. The spiralling pattern created by the seeds can produce spiral counts that are often related to neighbouring Fibonacci numbers, creating an efficient way of packing seeds across the available space.
The Fibonacci sequence is a mathematical pattern in which each number is the sum of the two preceding numbers. It appears in a number of natural growth patterns, including aspects of plant arrangement and spiral structures. Rather than nature following a perfect mathematical rule every time, these patterns are examples of mathematical relationships that can emerge through biological growth.
I have brought the sunflower and Fibonacci sequence together as a visual celebration of the relationship between nature, mathematics and pattern — something that can be appreciated simply as a beautiful design or as a reminder of the fascinating structures found in the natural world.
The earrings are made from lime wood, with the design laser printed and the oval shapes laser cut before each piece is hand sanded to smooth and refine the edges.
They are finished with stainless-steel earring findings. If you have a metal allergy or sensitivity, the findings can be changed to another suitable material on request. Alternative materials may incur an additional charge, depending on the findings selected.
Each pair is made from natural wood, so variations in grain, colour and small markings are part of the character of the material and mean every pair is slightly different.
