These striking pendants are crafted from naturally tumbled New Zealand freshwater pink mussel shells, each one alive with high iridescence — flashes of rainbow colour that shift and dance in the light. The shells have been left as close to their natural state as possible: only the fronts have been gently polished with a fine compound to enhance their shine, while the backs remain untouched and organic.
Because they are formed by nature and only lightly finished by hand, each pendant carries its own individuality — some may have small points or edges from the shell’s natural journey, adding to their authenticity and raw beauty. The result is a piece that feels both wild and refined, shimmering with natural rainbow fire.
Every pendant is selected at random from the batch, ensuring you receive a truly one-of-a-kind treasure. Perfect for ocean lovers, natural jewellery enthusiasts, or those drawn to the symbolism of shells as protective charms and emblems of life’s constant flow.

✨ Meaning & Symbolism: Mussel shells have long been symbols of protection, resilience, and connection to water’s healing flow. Their iridescence represents inner beauty revealed through life’s journey, while the natural form carries the grounding, protective strength of the ocean.
🔬 The Science:
New Zealand freshwater pink mussel shells come from Echyridella menziesii, an endemic species of freshwater mussel found in lakes and rivers across Aotearoa. Their distinctive iridescence is caused by microscopic structures in the shell’s inner nacre layer. Nacre, commonly known as mother-of-pearl, is composed of thin platelets of aragonite (a crystalline form of calcium carbonate) arranged in layers, bonded with elastic proteins.
When light hits these layers, it scatters and interferes, producing the vivid rainbow flashes seen on the surface. This natural phenomenon is called structural coloration — the same process responsible for the colours of peacock feathers, butterfly wings, and pāua shells.
Because the shell is mainly composed of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) in aragonite form, it is both strong and lightweight. Over time, natural tumbling in rivers smooths the shell’s edges, while polishing reveals and enhances the already-present iridescence.
✨ Care Guide:
• Avoid harsh chemicals, perfumes, or prolonged water exposure, as these can dull the natural iridescence.
• Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth after wearing to keep the nacre layer shining.
• Store separately in a soft pouch or box to prevent scratches from harder gemstones or metals.
• If the luster begins to fade, a tiny drop of natural oil (like almond or jojoba) can be buffed in.
• For a higher shine, a resin polishing compound can be carefully applied to restore a mirror-like finish.
These pendants are naturally strong but nacre can be brittle if dropped on hard surfaces — treat them with the same care you would give to pearls or other nacre-based jewellery.
Each pendant is unique, and the ones pictured in the group photo are part of a larger batch. If you have your eye on a particular piece, please get in touch when placing your order and I’ll do my best to reserve it for you. Otherwise, one will be selected at random from the batch.
