These New Zealand Rainbow Pāua Roimata Earrings are ocean treasures reborn — shaped by the tides and polished by hand to reveal their natural brilliance. Crafted from wild, beach-combed Pāua shell collected along the shores of Kaikōura, South Island, New Zealand, each earring captures the untamed spirit of Aotearoa’s coast.

Mounted on 925 sterling silver fish hooks and jump rings, these elongated Roimata drops shimmer with shifting hues of turquoise, violet, pink, and emerald — an iridescent dance only nature could create.

🌀 Polynesian Symbolism – The Roimata

In Māori and wider Polynesian tradition, the Roimata (teardrop) represents healing, emotional strength, and compassion. It symbolises the flow of emotion and connection — the tears of both sorrow and renewal — and is often worn to release the past and invite peace into the heart.
These earrings honour that lineage: light, fluid, and deeply symbolic of empathy and resilience.

🔬 Science of the Pāua Shell

Species: Haliotis iris (New Zealand abalone)
Composition: Aragonite (CaCO₃) and organic nacre proteins
Hardness: ~3.5 on the Mohs scale
Origin: Kaikōura, South Island, New Zealand

The vibrant rainbow effect comes from microscopic layers of aragonite crystals. As light enters the shell, it refracts and interferes between these layers, creating the iridescence that shifts with movement. Each shell’s pattern and colour are unique — a fingerprint of the ocean that shaped it.

🌊 Spiritual & Metaphysical Properties

Pāua shell embodies tranquillity, transformation, and ocean energy. It’s said to harmonise emotional tides, enhance intuition, and promote a sense of calm connectedness to nature.
In spiritual practice, it aligns with the heart and throat chakras, encouraging heartfelt expression and emotional balance.
