A central line of New Zealand pounamu runs through this Fenland bog oak roimata pendant, bringing together preserved British timber and greenstone in a flowing teardrop design. Individually handcrafted to order, it is a contemporary meeting of natural materials, cultural inspiration and personal meaning.

The roimata form and pounamu

Roimata means tears in te reo Māori. The teardrop pendant form is often associated with comfort and remembrance, although meanings vary between makers, wearers and cultural contexts. Here, the shape provides a flowing frame for the central pounamu inlay.

Pounamu holds deep significance for Māori as a taonga, or treasure. Used for tools, weapons and adornments, its value extends beyond appearance to relationships with people, place and ancestry. It should not be reduced to a single universal spiritual meaning.

This pendant is a contemporary work inspired by the roimata form. The pairing of British bog oak and New Zealand pounamu is the maker’s artistic interpretation, not a claim that this particular combination has an established meaning in Māori tradition.

Natural history: preserved wood and greenstone

Bog oak is oak preserved in waterlogged ground, not a separate tree species. Oxygen-poor conditions slow decay, while interactions with its burial environment contribute to the dark colouring. It remains timber with visible grain, rather than stone-replaced petrified wood. No exact age is claimed for the wood used in your pendant.

Pounamu is a culturally significant name for particular New Zealand stones, rather than one single mineral species. It includes nephrite jade and bowenite, a variety of serpentine. The central inlay in this design uses a mix of New Zealand pounamu, bringing contrasting material textures together with the dark oak.

Oak, ancestry and personal symbolism

Oak has a long place in the folklore of Britain and Ireland, including Celtic traditions and English culture, where it is often associated with strength, endurance and protection. Some present-day Wiccan, Pagan and other spiritual practitioners also associate bog oak with grounding, ancestral connection and transformation.

For the wearer, this meeting of wood and stone might represent continuity, remembrance or a connection between places that matter personally. It can be chosen as a talisman, a meaningful gift or simply for the interest of its natural materials. These are personal interpretations, not promises of healing or scientifically established effects.

Cord and finish

The pendant is suspended from an adjustable waxed nylon cord. The wood is finished with linseed oil and Brays Bees cream polish, complementing its natural grain and dark colouring.

Made to order

Each pendant is individually handcrafted. The photographs show an example of the design, rather than the exact pendant you will receive. Grain, colour, inlay pattern and small carving details vary naturally between pieces.

Please allow approximately one week for making before dispatch. Orders are made in the order they are received. If earlier custom commissions, material sourcing or other issues affect this estimate, I will discuss the timing with you by email. Delivery time is additional.

Please refer to the photograph with the 10p coin for a scale reference for the example shown. If you need particular measurements, material characteristics or a pendant for a specific date, please get in touch before ordering.

If you are ordering more than one item, please contact me to discuss combined postage, which depends on the size and weight of the package.
