Ancestor of Te Papa Full View belongs to my “Illustrations of my travels” range, bringing memories of backpacking into my digital art practice.
Working from my own photograph of a Māori ancestor sculpture at Te Papa, I developed this illustration in Procreate. Studying the sculptures has given me a way to practise blending and explore how shading can create a more lifelike sense of form in my work.
This print is my personal response to an artwork I encountered while travelling, rather than an explanation of the ancestor’s identity or cultural meaning. As a gesture of appreciation, I sent Te Papa original copies of my Māori prints for the museum to use as it wished.
For home collectors and art consultants choosing work for hospitality, residential or other interiors, the print offers a connection to an artist’s travels and creative development. It can be displayed on its own or alongside other illustrations from the range.
Printing and production
Printed on my behalf by Teemill, which I chose for its environmentally focused approach to production.
