This pendant is hand-carved from genuine New Zealand Pāua shell (Haliotis iris) into a simple triangular shape, allowing the shell’s natural beauty to take centre stage. The front shimmers with vibrant iridescent blues, greens, and pinks, while the reverse retains more of the shell’s natural texture, grounding the piece in its ocean-born origins.
Strung on a durable, adjustable waxed polyester cord, this pendant is perfect for casual everyday wear, beach-inspired fashion, or as a spiritual talisman. Each triangle is unique in colour play and carving, making every pendant a one-of-a-kind piece.
Science & Geology:
• Pāua shell is the New Zealand species of abalone, famed for its rainbow nacre (mother-of-pearl).
• The shell is composed mainly of calcium carbonate in aragonite form, layered in a microscopic structure that bends and reflects light, creating its distinctive iridescence.
• This natural process, called structural coloration, means no two Pāua shells ever look the same.
Spiritual & Symbolic Meaning:
In Māori culture, Pāua is a taonga (treasure), used in traditional carving to represent the eyes of ancestors and the watchfulness of the spirit. It is associated with protection, guidance, and connection to the ocean. Spiritually, Pāua is also thought to calm emotions, inspire creativity, and strengthen intuition, making it a meaningful talisman to wear close to the heart.
Care Guide:
• Avoid harsh chemicals or prolonged water exposure to preserve the shell’s iridescence.
• Wipe gently with a soft cloth after wearing.
• For long-lasting shine, store away from direct sunlight and heat.
