Raw New Zealand Serpentine Pendant | Natural Split Pounamu Form – Polished & Raw Sides
This pendant is carved from a humble piece of New Zealand serpentine, presenting a striking contrast between the stone's polished surface and its naturally split, raw inner texture. One side reveals the smooth outer skin of the original river pebble, gently polished to a subtle sheen. The other side remains as it was found — unpolished, textured, and deeply expressive — a raw geological fracture that occurred naturally within the stone.
Unlike high-grade pounamu, this serpentine is of lower quality — porous, earthy, and susceptible to further cracking if mistreated. And yet, that imperfection is where its beauty lies. It speaks of nature unrefined, unshaped by force, and valued not for its flawlessness but for its story.
Material Origins
This serpentine (chemical composition: (Mg,Fe)₃Si₂O₅(OH)₄) comes from the South Island of Aotearoa (New Zealand), formed through metamorphic processes involving oceanic crust and heat. Its grounding green hues link it to the energy of Papatuanuku, the Earth Mother. It’s not uncommon for serpentine to carry the term "pounamu" colloquially, though this piece is not traditional jade.
Symbolism
The dual nature of the pendant — smooth and raw — symbolizes the balance between refinement and authenticity, the outer world and the inner self. It’s a piece for those who appreciate the quiet wisdom of nature, the beauty in the broken, and the strength in being whole, even with visible scars.
Please note:
Due to its lower density and natural split, this pendant should be worn with care and respect. It is not suited to rough handling or impact but will last for years if treated with gentleness — just as nature intended.
