Science & Geology:
Black kyanite belongs to the aluminosilicate family, with the chemical formula Al₂SiO₅. Its fan-like crystal growth is a result of high-pressure metamorphic processes, often forming in schists and gneisses. It rates between 4.5–7 on the Mohs scale, with its hardness varying depending on direction, which is why it forms such distinct striations and blade-like structures. Kyanite’s name comes from the Greek kyanos, meaning “deep blue,” though black kyanite is colored by trace iron and carbon inclusions.

Spiritual Significance:
In metaphysical traditions, black kyanite is a powerful stone of grounding, protection, and energetic cleansing. Its natural fan formation is said to sweep away negativity and blockages, helping to align and balance the chakras. Many crystal practitioners call it a “witch’s broom” for this reason. It’s also a stone of resilience, believed to help the wearer cut through stagnant energy, patterns, and attachments, making way for clarity and transformation.
