This pendant is carved from genuine New Zealand Pāua shell (Haliotis iris) in the style of a Hei Toki (adze) — a traditional form once used as a working tool and later as a symbol of strength, authority, and craftsmanship. The pointed bottom edge recalls the sharpness of the adze, while the polished face of the shell reveals its breathtaking rainbow iridescence in shifting hues of blue, green, and pink.
Suspended on an adjustable waxed polyester cord, this pendant is comfortable, durable, and perfect for everyday wear. Each piece is one-of-a-kind, as no two Pāua shells share the same colour play or patterning.
Science & Geology:
• Pāua, the New Zealand abalone, is celebrated for its vivid nacre, caused by layers of aragonite crystals and proteins that bend light to create shimmering rainbow effects.
• This optical effect is known as structural coloration — each pendant glows differently depending on how the light touches it.
• Found along New Zealand’s coasts, Pāua is sustainably harvested, with shells repurposed to reduce waste and honour their natural beauty.
Spiritual & Symbolic Meaning:
• In Māori tradition, the Hei Toki represents mana (strength, authority, leadership) and is often worn as a talisman for courage and resilience.
• Combined with Pāua, a taonga (treasure) symbolising watchfulness, spiritual guidance, and protection, this pendant becomes both a striking adornment and a meaningful spiritual piece.
• Together, they embody strength guided by wisdom and connection to the ocean’s energy.
Care Guide:
• Avoid harsh chemicals, soaps, or prolonged soaking.
• Wipe with a soft cloth after wearing to maintain its shine.
• Store away from strong sunlight to keep its natural colours vivid.
