A Jesmonite pendant with red and white pigment. The pendants is shaped into a modern Polynesian Toki a style to create a sleek statement pendant. and hung on waxed polyester cord.
Jesmonite is a gypsium powder mixed with a water based resin to form a cement like mixture that sets almost like stone once fully cured. Originally cast into a slab I have then cut it down and carved it into this modern pendant piece, using and recycling Offcut stone from my lapidary studio to work in the Jesmonite.
It has been sprayed with a sealant afterwards to make it waterproof in case you get caught in the rain. How ever I do not advise you wearing this piece in the shower or swimming.
I started learning to carve in Hokitika while backpacking New Zealand. It was the one thing I was desperate to do. It took a while to find a teacher that would teach a woman, but I got there in the end. I have been trying to get all the equipment together ever since to keep going. I’ve since started taking the skills I learnt and using across different materials and mediums to create different types of jewellery and effects.
I am a rough around the edges carver and into not believe in flawless. I believe that flaws, a slight roughness and inclusions give character and personality to a piece and makes it more unique. Those flaws are what call out to people because you resonate with that flaw, that piece becomes part of telling your story and personality. So never evet be afraid of the imperfect.
